The Insiders Map?

Postby gone2alpine » Thu Feb 05, 2009 9:31 pm

So there is definitely in existence some older maps that name a lot of places that are not named on newer maps. Reportedly, one of those maps is posted in First Aid. I do try to avoid the First Aid room myself. (Previous visits have always been focused on assisting some freestyler).

Last season there was some discussion at TGR about posting a scan of an older map. Did that ever happen? I would love to post it here...

Or should we just start a new one based on the current map? We can probably agree on some easy stuff like Broccoli Tree and F Tree - but we could definitely have some interesting discussion on some other areas.

I'll throw the first idea here....

The new trail map has some good additions that weren't on the old one. I have one of the old maps you speak of. I'd be happy to show it to you and we could perhaps create a new master in electronic form. Mine is the same as the one in First Aid.

Do you have a way to scan it? I haven't owned a scanner during this millenium. In my world, everything starts digital.

I've seen this map, too. It was posted here http://AMNSP.collectivex.com, which was a website for the ski patrol. I guess it closed down as I can no longer access it. Sure wish I'd saved it when I had the chance.....

I was thinking the same thing yesterday. There's a littl pow stash above Butcher Block Rock/Ice Cliffs area that I know must have a name.

Not sure about the stash, but the rock to skiers' right of Butcher Block is called Ski Jump.

Old Maps of Alpine

Postby bwang » Thu Feb 25, 2010 8:25 pm

I found this old map on a google search. Is this the one in First Aid or is there an even better one?

Those maps are not necessarily that old. It's has Weasel instead of Hot Wheels. Other lifts are basically current. The AM Ski Patrol site that had a list of lift installs stops before the Hot Wheels installation. Not sure of that year. There is a much more complete map that I am looking for....

That's not the map we're talking about. The one I have also has things like Hemlock Bowl, Subdivision Bowl (the gullies we now refer to as condo run), Crag's Gully - that chute you get to if you hang hard left near the top of Promised Land, Contemplation Point (now the top of Hot Wheels Chair), Kensey's Cut (traverse below Lower Saddle), Tree Line Cirque (skier's right of Sherwood Cliffs over near Hidden Knolls), Marenka (that gnarly gap between cliffs between Lower Saddle and Keyhole - often mistakenly called Nun's Cunt which is actually the more narrow chute skiers left of Marenka, Joint Point (the cliffs that divide Alpine Bowl from Terry's Return, Howard's Hollow - just below Joint Point, John's Peril as well as Peter's Peril - John's is the south side of the ridge that drops right onto the top Roundhouse, Poma Rocks (between Bernie's Bowl and Pond Slope), Piston Bully Slope (skier's left of Beaver Bowl facing south back into the heart of the bowl from the ridge, Sandy's Corner - the intersection of Werner's Schuss and Dance Floor where that snow making machine is, Skadi Hill - between Yellow trail and Hot Wheels Gully. Plus a few other things. On the back side it also points out SP Rock, which you get to before Grouse Rock (SP stands for Sierra Pacific - the railway), Friar's Tuck - the lift line under Sherwood chair, Maid Marion and Robin Hood - the groomers just skier's left of Sherwood chair near the top, Ashcroft Gully - the gully right under Sherwood Chair.

Hope that helps.
