3/2/10 An Imposter At The Keyboard

Hello Skiers,

I was able to enjoy a rare midweek non-holiday day at Alpine Meadows today. With Andy gone for another 10 days, I thought it was time to update the front page.

It really was deserted today at Alpine. Between the AM Womens' Clinic and my school group, there weren't too many more people enjoying today's snow.

A quick check of the winds this morning showed that a Summit closing was in the cards. Winds were up and snow was supposed to happen later in the day. Things evidently sped up because it was snowing at 7:45 on arrival. By the opening bell, it was dumping. It continued all day.

This made for a very enjoyable surface on groomers, which was fortunate as we have been getting a lot of thaw lately. Initially, off piste runs were horribly hard, with a light dusting of new snow.

Most of our day was spent on the lower mountain. Upper mountain visibility was terrible. Snow was piling up quickly but it was not yet enough to cover moguls and ice chunks from yesterday. It's unfortunate that we keep getting new snow, but it is so wet that it refreezes into solid icy lumps.

Our best runs of the day were in untracked groomers. By day's end, the Red Ridge rail park was skiing like butter. Similar fun was found in lesser tracked areas of Gunner's Knob.

Scott also had some money runs as well. Seldom Slides Trees are often a good bet on storm days. Today was no exception. It's just getting there may cause some unwanted dermabrasion!

Thanks to everyone at Alpine that made sure my school group had an awesome day. Everything was top notch. I am pretty sure you created new customers today.

Enjoy your day. Mark (Subbing For Andy)
